The 67th season marks Dr. Luis Millán’s eighth as Music Director and Conductor of the Butte Symphony. In his tenure at BSA, Luis has helped strengthen the volunteer musician base critical to the orchestra's success. Of particular value is his effort to introduce new and interesting composers and pieces to volunteer musicians and BSA audiences alike.
Dr. Millán is in his thirteenth year at The University of Montana where in addition to being Director of Orchestras, he directs the Classical Guitar studio and teaches Music Theory. Under his leadership, The University of Montana Symphony Orchestra has demonstrated phenomenal growth and is now recognized as one of the best university orchestras in the Pacific Northwest. Luis also serves as Music Director/Conductor of the Montana Lyric Opera and as orchestral Director at the Red Lodge Music Festival. Dr. Millán is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician and engagements include conducting All-State Orchestras in Oklahoma (2010) and Montana (2011), as well as the Billings Youth Orchestra (2011).
In addition to conducting and teaching, Dr. Millán remains active as a classical guitarist. Recent performances include concerts throughout the Pacific Northwest and recitals in Vienna, Austria and Shanghai, China. He has toured Spain five times performing solo recitals at the Palacio de Viana in Cordoba, concerts on public television and radio, and duo recitals with his father, Spanish poet Rafael Millán.
Before moving to Montana, Dr. Millán directed the Orchestra Program at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas; conducted youth orchestras in Topeka, Kansas, and Jackson and Saginaw, Michigan; served as Music Director of OPERA ONE and the Opera Company of Mid-Michigan, Lansing, Michigan; and taught at Michigan State University’s Community Music School and Flint Institute of Music.
Dr. Millán holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from St. Olaf College (1991) and Master of Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees in Orchestral Conducting from Michigan State University (1993, 1997).
Apart from music and teaching, Luis tries to keep up with his wife Mandi, and their children, Sofía and Emilio.
